Cat Grass for a Happy Mittens

Cats love chewing on grass. And corn seedlings, apparently (ugh!). And young cover crops (double ugh.) In order to keep Mittens out of the raised beds, we’ve planted a flat of cat grass just for her. She’s enthralled.

The convergence of two things brought this on: free Cat Treats, Mixed Gourmet Greens grass seeds arriving from Renee’s Garden Seeds (thanks, Renee’s Media Kit 2014), and some freshly germinated Sonora White Wheat from our germination test at Seed School.

We spread out the paper towel of germinated wheat on a flat of soil and compost. Then we sprinkled the cat treat seed around the perimeter. Knowing full well that the seed is spaced far apart from the germination test, we compensated by broadcasting the cat grass seed more thickly on the edges.

Next we covered the seeds with about 1/4-1/2 inch of soil and compost.

After a few weeks of watering daily in a sunny location, we have achieved cat grass success!

We plan to keep the seed flat going as long as possible and re-seed it occasionally through the season. As Mittens chews the tops of the grass down, it will keep growing on its own.
